Avery Lee + Emily Fenton

Avery Lee and the Sweeties blend folk storytelling with the energy of '90s pop-country, rooted in the rhythms of life in Oklahoma and Arkansas. Their music and work is a rejection and resistance to gendered expectations and disenfranchisement of the working class. Lee’s lyrics confront norms of smallness, shame, and humility in the midsouth, and ask audiences to do the same. Their onstage presence is stern yet inquisitive, verging on confrontational. The resulting sound is a dance between softness and intensity. The music weaves gentle folk melodies with punk-inspired grit, punctuated by guitar riffs that echo the soulful twang of a pedal steel, creating a sound that’s as emotionally grounded as it is dynamic.

Emily Fenton is an artist from Little Rock, Arkansas with roots in Ithaca and New York City. Her music absorbs the raw honesty of folk, charming melodies of country, and irreverent attitude of rock ‘n’ roll to create a sound as unique and personal as the message they carry. Fenton’s autobiographical songwriting and vocal style evoke a nostalgia reminiscent of 90s Lilith Fair. An affinity for cut-to-the-chase lyrics and a fascination for psychedelic concept albums led to the creation of her first full-length album, Hello, from Planet Earth. The album was recorded live at the White Water Tavern in Little Rock, AR in the summer of 2022."
