Queer Night: Tearjerker's Brokeback Mountain

Immediately upon its release, Brokeback Mountain became a cultural touchstone. For the first time, a story of queer love in a pre-stonewall era unfolded to a mass audience. Artist Natalie Woodlock has been organizing screenings of Ang Lee’s 2005 film, handing out handkerchiefs at the beginning of the movie, and afterwards asking viewers to write down the scenes that made them cry. She embroiders the names of each person who sheds tears on their handkerchief, and illustrates each scene for an artists’ book she is making. This project is a work of sentimental collaboration, highlighting the connective possibility and collective power of film, and its potential to transform the cinema into a site of communal exchange between audience members. By illustrating the scenes from Brokeback Mountain that brought viewers to tears, she aims to memorialize the circle of sympathy present at each screening in the pages of each book.

This night is all about community! Welcoming queer identifying people + allies to celebrate and strengthen Santa Fe queer communities. Our goal is to create a space that is intentionally queer-centered, initiated and inspired by members of our Queer-identifying team and community.

Come on out every Monday at La Reina to meet like-minded members of the community. A portion of sales every Monday will support Transgender Resource Center of New Mexico. Transgender Resource Center New Mexico provides advocacy, education, and direct services in support of transgender, gender nonconforming, nonbinary, and gender variant people and their families.

*Ask our bartenders to make our cocktails into a mocktail + fun non-alcoholic options!
